About ECAR

Reading is fundamentally an act of making meaning from a variety of texts.  All elements of reading instruction should support and complement this purpose. Every Child a Reader addresses the following critical elements of reading instruction to ensure student success:


• Daily demonstrations of fluency

• Modeling, guided and independent practice of all new skills and strategies

• Text selection appropriate to student needs and instructional objectives

• Clearly defined and consistent instructional objectives

• Explicit and systematic phonological awareness and phonics instruction

• Explicit and systematic comprehension strategy instruction

• Research-based methods for developing vocabulary and fluency

• Balance among the genres of reading (informational, persuasive, and narrative)

• Assured student success through appropriate levels of challenge and support

• Demonstrated, Differentiated, and Directed Reading instruction daily
